“Even if you’re on the right track ...

... you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

SCD Group is relocating its office.  During this transition, Steve is revisiting some former blogs.

I originally posted this on 1/1/12.  The post still applies.

Think Blackberry, Dell and other breakthrough companies who seemingly didn't seek to improve on their initial success and watched as competitors changed the game and moved forward, leaving them in the dusk.

I’ve always thought this Will Rogers quote applies to associations and nonprofits. Often, our desire for consistency gets us into a rut without realizing it.

Think about it:

  • Do your conference schedules follow the same format year after year? The number and time of general sessions? The number of breakout sessions? The times and hours for the trade show and special events?
  • What about your website? When was the last change in design? Update of the content? Addition of a blog, videos and/or photos?
  • Have your membership offerings (benefits, services, programs) been the same for the last five years? Do you member renewal notices have the same look, design, words as the last few years?
  • How much has the design of your newsletters, magazines and/or journals changed?
Is the lack of change a purposeful decision? Or, is it because it’s just easier to keep doing what you’ve always been doing?

Is the decision to “keep on keeping on” being made by the board? Committees? Staff?

As we start 2012, perhaps it is time for a fresh look not only at what you are doing but also at what others – those who are connecting with your members/prospects – are doing.

After all, even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over.
